Pest Inspection:
Australian Property Surveyors
Contact us to arrange a Pest Inspection for peace of
mind. Often extensive damage by termites is not immediately visible as they will
be eating away behind the wall linings and the paintwork. Termites can cause
thousands of dollars worth of damage, and they can affect the structural
integrity of the building.
A pest inspector will check for
termites and also report on the effectiveness or lack of termite barriers, as
well as check for evidence of any other wood boring pest damage.
We will thoroughly check the
residential dwelling in accordance with Australian Standard AS 4349.1
Termites
Many insects
are confused with termites, especially ants. Termites are sometimes referred to
as ‘white ants’ because of their pale appearance.
One of the main
characteristics of termites and termite colonies is their tendency to avoid open
air and bright lights, meaning they will stay underground or within wood
products. It is almost impossible for an inspector to visually identify or
locate an active termite infestation just by looking at the finished surface of
a wall or the accompanying trim.
Termites are social insects,
working and living together in groups (colonies). Each colony contains several
types (castes) which differ in body shape and behaviour, and each caste is
specialised to perform different tasks.
Three principal castes
are recognised: workers, soldiers and reproductives (the primary king and queen
and sometimes supplementary reproductives).
Some species of timber are
resistant to termites, but none is entirely ‘termite proof’. Termites will often
damage materials they cannot digest, for example, plastics, rubber, metal or
mortar. Primarily, this damage occurs when the indigestible items are
encountered during the termites search for food.
